A very important and significant event for the helical pier industry has recently occurred.  The long awaited and much anticipated Helical Foundation Systems and Devices Acceptance Criteria (AC358) for the International Code Council Evaluation Services has been posted on the ICC-ES website

As previously reported by HPW, Dr. Howard Perko (HPW Technical Review Panel Member), a regional manager for Denver-based CTL/Thompson is the lead developer for the project.  The Ad Hoc Committee of Helical Foundation Manufacturers (CHFM) funded and managed this important project, and the CHFM is comprised of the following helical pier manufacturing companies: Chance–Atlas www.abchance.com, Magnum Piering www.magnumpiering.com, MacLean Dixie www.joslynmfg.com, Ram Jack Foundation Solutions www.ramjack.com, Fasteel www.fasteel.com, Techno Metal Post www.technometalpost.com, Earth Contact Products www.earthcontactproducts.com, Grip Tite www.griptite.com, and Can’t Sink www.cantsink.com.

“Speaking on behalf of all CHFM members, we are more than pleased to have reached this significant milestone on this very important mission for the helical pier industry”, said CHFM chairman, Bill Bonekemper of Magnum Piering.  “In addition to the sizeable investments made by committee members, it has taken more than two long years of significant travel, many countless hours of meetings, and most importantly, a dedication to a greater cause for the good of the helical pier industry.  While our work may not yet be finished, it is very gratifying to have reached this long awaited milestone,” Bonekemper added.

In their cover letter, ICC-ES staff members have posted a list of 8 statements of concern relative to certain sections of the AC.  The letter also includes policy guidelines and specific instructions for submitting comments.  Additionally, there is information about the public hearing now scheduled for February 7th in Los Angeles, CA.

HPW will continue to monitor this process closely, and we will report on events as they unfold.  To read previous articles written by HPW on the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria process, please click here.
